The mission of the Portland Police Department is to enhance the quality of life throughout the City of Portland by working cooperatively with all of our citizens to preserve the peace, enforce the law, reduce fear, and promote a safe and caring environment.
Initiatives
Construction of a Regional Forensic Crime Laboratory
The Portland Police Department will house a Regional Forensic Crime Laboratory at 109 Middle Street. Agencies collaborating with the police department at this time include: Falmouth, South Portland, Westbrook, Yarmouth, Scarborough, Cape Elizabeth, Windham, and the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office. Construction of the new lab is scheduled to begin in the summer of 2008.
Establishment of the Southern Maine Violent Crimes Task Force
The Task Force was put into place at the Portland Police Department in
service to all of Southern Maine. Our partners are Biddeford, Scarborough, South
Portland, the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office and the U.S. Marshal’s Service.
The mission
of the Task Force is to investigate violent crimes and apprehend those persons
who have committed crimes of violence.

Community Policing Centers
