Officer Petty received a B.A. in Criminology from the University of Maine in 1993 and became an officer for the Portland Police Department in 1994. Her current work in patrol has been primarily in Sector 1, where she is well known as an officer and resident. Officer Petty’s communication skills and professionalism have enabled her to develop excellent working relationships, not only within the department, but with other agencies and the community at large. Some of the facts about Gayle and her career at the Portland Police Department are:

In keeping with her proactive approach, Officer Petty has developed MACH (Mechanical Advantage Control Hold) training for the team in order to enhance officer safety while patrolling. She continues to research ways in which to refine methods and systems.

Gayle volunteered as a USM student in our community policing station in Parkside before she was a police officer.

Her interest in art and photography has been longstanding, and when the PPD calendar project started she worked as a police photographer to help make it a success.

Gayle was selected as the Portland Police Officer of the Month for June 2004.

Officer Petty has received an Award for Heroism.
